Storm damage roof inspection in Weymouth

Storm damage evidence in Weymouth, where the Georgian esplanade's hidden parapet gutters mean failures overflow inward, not visibly outside.

An unbroken front with nothing to break it

Weymouth's Georgian esplanade runs as one continuous rendered terrace along a sweeping bay, fully open to the Channel with salt and gale exposure along the whole front. Unlike a headland town where one side of a bay gets some shelter, Weymouth's low, flat seafront gives a storm a clear, unbroken run at every property along it at once.

Behind the esplanade, the Victorian and Edwardian streets and the very large post-war estates see a somewhat softened version of the same weather, while Portland stone buildings towards the harbour bring their own detailing, with slate hung against stone rather than timber-framed construction.

Weymouth Harbour itself, tucked behind the esplanade rather than facing the Channel directly, gives the fishing and sailing quarter a distinctly different exposure to the bow-fronted terraces a few streets away, and Portland Bill further south takes the most extreme version of the same storm before it even reaches the town.

Parapets that hide the problem

The specific local risk on the esplanade is the parapet and hidden gutter construction behind the bow fronts: a gutter or box behind that parapet wall that overflows in a storm sends water down the inside face of the building rather than dripping visibly off an eave the way a normal roof edge would. A resident several floors down can see the stain long before anyone establishes it came from the roof at all.

Flat and mansard sections on the esplanade terraces add a second failure mode, with membrane and lead work under wind pressure and salt spray in a way a simple pitched slate roof several streets back does not experience in the same combination.

Why an aerial record settles the question fast

Because the failure is hidden behind a parapet by design, ground-level inspection from the esplanade itself tells a leaseholder or a loss adjuster almost nothing useful. A flown pass looking straight down onto the roof and the parapet gutters is often the only practical way to see the silted or damaged section responsible, without anyone getting onto a Georgian parapet that was never built for foot traffic.

For blocks split into multiple flats, that photograph does double duty: it settles which part of the building is actually responsible for a specific flat's water ingress, which matters as much for a service charge dispute between leaseholders as it does for the insurance claim itself.

Portland, connected by Chesil Beach to the south, takes an even more extreme version of the same Channel exposure than the Weymouth esplanade itself, and though it sits in a different postcode, a claim covering properties on both sides of the bay is handled as one job where the addresses are close enough together. The DT3 to DT4 postcode area covers the harbour, the esplanade and the newer estates inland in a single flight.

Behind the survey

What Weymouth clients are actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency. Registration and insurance details go over with the pack as a matter of course, because most adjusters and agents need both on file before they can act on it.

100 megapixel camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video. The resolution is what lets a single slate or a torn edge of felt be cropped into and still hold together, which matters when a photograph is the evidence.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera, used where water may already be tracking into the structure through storm damage and needs tracing rather than guessing at.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. A certificate is supplied with the pack without anyone having to chase for it, which is usually one of the first things a loss adjuster or managing agent asks for.
